Two more people have been arrested for allegedly vandalizing the newly launched Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) line.
They were charged with sabotage, destruction of infrastructure and engaging in organised unlawful activity.The arrest brings the number of suspects connected to the destruction of the new rail line to 13.Pius Mwanzia and Samuel Kamau appeared before Mombasa Senor Principal Magistrate Francis Kyambia on Tuesday but denied the charges preferred against them.Prosecutor Eric Masila said in court that an investigation officer had sworn an affidavit asking that Mwanzia and Kamau be held in custody to allow him conduct more investigations.Masila asked the court to grant each of the suspects a Sh3 million cash bail or a surety bond of Sh6 million similar to that granted to eleven suspects on Monday at a separate court session.“The court do grant the same bond terms applied to other suspects for this case for the purpose of consistence and uniformity in decision making,” Masila said.Court also heard that the Director of Public Prosecution would apply for the consolidation of the cases of the two suspects with that of the eleven others scheduled for mention on June 19.Kyambia had earlier directed the cases be mentioned on Tuesday during which he will rule whether to free the two suspects on bond.Kamau and Mwanzia who were unrepresented were arrested on Tuesday.The SGR line was launched by President Uhuru Kenyatta on May 31 in Mombasa.The president warned anyone found vandalizing the investment that cost Sh327 billion to put up will face the law.
