The Luo Nyanza region is made up of four counties, namely: Kisumu, Siaya, Migori and Homa Bay.
The region is mostly inhabited by the luo community, who, also hold most of the political seats in the area.
Two Members of Parliament, however, went against the wave and won parliamentary seats despite being non-luos.
Here are the two:
1. Junnet Mohammed
He became the first Kenyan Somali to be elected a Member of the National Assembly in Nyanza region.
Junet, who represents Suna East constituency in Migori county is a member of Orange Democratic Movement.
He was born in Mandera but grew up in Migori.
2. Shakeel Shabbir
He is of Asian origin and was born in 1953 at Kisumu city.
In 2007, Shabbir was elected to represent the Kisumu Town East constituency in Parliament on an ODM ticket.
Last year, he lost in the ODM nominations but successfully defended his seat as an independent candidate.
