Two middle aged women are being held at Njoro police station after they were arrested on Tuesday evening distributing fake fertilizer to traders and farmers in Njoro town. Speaking from his office, Njoro police boss, Patrick Lai, said that the suspects identified as Mary Njoroge and Miriam Mwaura were arrested after some traders who had declined to buy the fertilizers from them alerted police and Anti-Counterfeit Goods officials who went to the scene. “The suspects were in possession of about 50, 2kg packets of fertilizer which they claimed were genuine and bearing the label of a popular agro vet products manufacture. One of the women claimed to be a sales executive of a distribution firm attached to the company but when anti-counterfeit officials arrived at the scene, they confirmed the fertilizer was counterfeit,’’ said Lai. He added that police were still carrying out investigations before taking the suspects to court to answer criminal charges. Police are also holding two college students suspected to be connected to an armed robbery gang that has been terrorizing residents of the area for the past two months. Lai said that Martin Ouma, 24 and Jacob Waweru, 26 were arrested by police on patrol on Tuesday night while driving a Probox in which two homemade guns were allegedly unearthed. “We suspect that the young men are connected to the deadly gang that is terrorizing residents in a series of armed robberies and carjacking. We are interrogating them for more leads,’’ said the police officer.
