Two police offiers have been confirmed death while seven others have been left injured, after the attack in Pandaguo area of Lamu County.
The attackers are said to have struck at 5am, and commandeered the officer’s vehicle and destroyed a communication mast.
"We have enough officers on the ground fighting the attackers, whom we suspect are Al-Shabaab militants,” a senior security officer who spoke to the Nation on condition of anonymity because he is not authorised to brief the media.
“The exchange of fire started since 5.45am till now. We suspect there are casualties, but I am yet to establish.”
The fighting lasted for over seven hours, with Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinnet confirming that it was still ongoing by 1pm.
According to Coast regional police commander Akello Odhiambo, details to the attack were still scanty, but confirmed their team was handling the situation.
Pandanguo headman Adan Golja confirmed that gunshots were heard coming from the police post at around 5.30am, forcing villagers to run for their lives.
The attack comes barely two weeks after another attack that left eight people including four police officers dead.
The attack happened when a Rapid Border Patrol Unit (RBPU) vehicle they were travelling in ran over a landmine in Ota, Lamu East.
