A possible resignation of IEBC chairman Wafula Chebukati informed President Uhuru Kenyatta to change law to empower his deputy, Consolatta Maina, says Gideon Mamboleo.
Although he move has met resistance from a section of opposition leaders, the law has recommended drastic changes within the electoral commission.
And Mamboleo says the country could have plunged into a constitutional crisis in the event of Chabukati’s resignation due to his immense powers.
“If Chebukati resigned today, kenya will not go for an election and believe me there would be a constitutional crisis. The law was crafted that it is only him who can pronounce the winner.
“Jubilee now wants the same powers accorded to the Vice and other commissioners a move however, I think is guided b mistrust in the commission,” he adds.
Also, he contends that Chebukati’s strenuous relationship with a section of commissioners and the secret memo to Ezra Chiloba might have made Uhuru uncomfortable with him.
Before landing the lucrative job, Chebukati was at one time a staunch member of the opposition party, ODM.
