Shibale Primary School and Shibale Secondary School in Mumias West Sub-County, Kakamega County have been closed after it was discovered both schools are lacking toilets.
According to Antony Ngaira, a public health officer, students had been sharing a pit latrine with their teachers at Shibale Mixed Secondary School.
"A girls’ toilet collapsed on September 6, 2017 at Shibale Primary forcing girls to share the same facility with boys," said Ngaira as quoted by the Daily Nation.
Were Webukha, the principal of Shibale Secondary School believes it will take time for the school to make the necessary renovations to the toilets citing economic struggles within the community.
He added that several parents living in Shibale slums are struggling with poverty.
As a result, Julius Chimwene, the chairman of Shibale Primary School board of management has called upon good samaritans, county government and national government to help support the school financially.
