Two schools in Kisii county are in dire need of support to shelter their students following two separate fire incidents.
Nyamache boys and Machongo secondary school dormitories were razed by the infernos whose cause was initially attributed to an electric fault.
At Nyamache boys secondary, 34 students sustained slight injuries and were rushed to the nearby sub-county hospital where they received medication and were discharged.
Principal Orina Ogechi, said the school had experienced power blackouts in the night before the fire broke out.
Kisii county Member of Executive Committee in charge of Education, Skitter Ocharo urged learning institutions in the area to put in place disaster preparedness mechanisms.
She decried the lack of training in firefighting and installation of extinguishers in schools to mitigate destruction witnessed during such disasters.
She also called on Kenya Power Company to investigate the claims that the tragedies were caused by an electric fault
Fire outbreaks have become common in Kisii recently with a suspicion that some were deliberately arson cases by disgruntled students and local communities to express disapproval of the management among others.
