Two people were shot dead in Kibera on Monday during demonstrations which erupted following the Supreme Court’s decision to uphold President Uhuru Kenyatta’s win in the October 26 repeat presidential election.
The two were allegedly shot dead by anti-riot police officers who were deployed to restore calm after chaos erupted.
One of them was an elderly woman who succumbed to bullet injuries in the afternoon upon arrival at St. Mary’s Hospital.
“The woman was doing her business as usual and she was struck by stray bullet in the abdomen. Instead of alerting neighbours, she went into her house and by the time she was rushed to hospital, it was too late to save her,” said a resident of Katwekera area as reported by Citizen.
The chaos erupted after the Supreme Court ruled that they saw no fault in the president's reelection.
“The court has unanimously determined that the petitions are not merited. As a consequence, the presidential election of 26 October is hereby upheld as is the election of the third respondent (Kenyatta),” said Chief Justice David Maraga.
