Two Egerton University students have been arrested by police in Njoro after they assaulted a bar owner. The students, according to Njoro police boss Fredrick Lai, were yet to travel to their homes after the closure of the university. “The students have been indulging in alcohol drinking sprees in the university surroundings claiming that they don’t have money to use for transport,” said Lai. Lai said the students entered a bar at Njokerio village business centre at around 5pm and refused to pay their bills later in the evening after consuming alcohol worth Sh 500. The police boss said that the students attacked a bar attendant after he demanded that they pay for the drinks and further attacked the bar owner who had been called in by other patrons to come and restore the situation. The two, the police officer said, were armed with a metal object and a penknife that they used to assault the bar attendant and the owner. “It seems they are undergoing a psychological disorder after failing to travel home after the university closed. They have been selling personal property and indulging in over-drinking claiming they can’t raise fare to go home. They caused mayhem at the bar and were arrested by police officers on patrol at around 10pm,’’ he said.
