Police in Mombasa on Friday arrested two suspects for allegedly stealing 500 bags of sugar worth Sh 2 million.
The suspects are reported to have hijacked a truck transporting the sugar from Mombasa, before driving to a private location off the Mombasa-Nairobi highway where they offloaded the commodity.Confirming the incident, Coast Regional CID Commander Pius Macharia said the suspects drugged the driver and his assistant, before hijacking the truck.“After the driver and the turn boy gained consciousness, they narrated how they gave a woman a lift who gave them juice. The drink appears to have been laced with drugs,” said Macharia.Macharia said the two suspects are believed to be part of a network that has been stealing from motorists who ply the Mombasa-Mariakani route.“This is a syndicate operating between Mombasa and Mariakani and we have crucial leads that will enable us arrest the master minds. We are still doing investigations and we will take them to court on Monday,” said Macharia. The incident took place between Mazeras and Mariakani where the driver and his assistant were found unconscious by their employer.
