A two-year-old girl drowned in a well on Monday evening in Mang'auni village, Katine location.
Confirming the incident, Katine chief Mr Timothy Musau, said the toddler, who was just learning how to walk, was roaming around the homestead before heading to the well which supplies the family with water for domestic use.
Musau said the child's mother was engaged in house chores and did not notice her kid was in danger.
“After realising the child was missing, the mother searched around the homestead only to find the girl's body floating in the well,” said Musau.
The chief urged parents to fence or seal their wells to avoid such calamities especially during the rainy season.
"Anyone can accidentally fall into a well and therefore the best way to prevent such incidences in future is by fencing or covering the wells," said Musau.
The chief asked residents to be vigilant during the rainy season and urged parents to caution their children against playing near water bodies.
