The county government of Uasin Gishu has maintained that strict measures will be put in place so that all hawkers are moved out of the Eldoret town's Central Business District (CBD).This is despite an outcry from the hawkers and members of the public over continued harassment of the hawkers by the county enforcement officers.Uasin Gishu Deputy Governor Daniel Chemno on Monday said that restoring order within the town's CBD was a keen priority of their government."These hawkers operate outside other traders’ premises, who pay rent. The hawkers prevent buyers from accessing the premises, resulting to low returns," Chemno said."We have the Sh100 million hawker’s wholesale market which is complete. We also have the Sh150 million Kahoya market which was opened in 2012. We want to ask the traders to relocate to these markets and operate from there," he added. The Eldoret hawkers chairman David Mburu however said that stalls in the respective markets can only accommodate 311 traders, a number far below the total number of hawkers in the county."Many hawkers are not comfortable using the main market since it’s far from their customers," he added.
