Uasin Gishu County government Agriculture Executive Cyril Cheruiyot has challenged farmers to embrace technology in their farming activities.
Briefing the press at his office on Tuesday, Cheruiyot said that technology has become important and should be incorporated in agriculture.
The Executive observed that farmers stand to gain more if they adopt technology in their farming.
“Farmers should take advantage of technology and incorporate it in their farming for better returns,” he said.
Mr Cheruiyot indicated that farmers can take advantage of the social media and other communication platforms available on the internet to market their products.
He said that online marketing reaches out to many customers adding that the county government is working on policies to educate farmers on importance of ICT in farming.
The Executive at the same time challenged residents to take up farming. He said that Uasin Gishu is known as the food basket for the country.
Cheruiyot revealed that the county in collaboration with the national government and stakeholders are working out to ensure that farmers get subsidized planting materials.
He asked farmers not to sell their maize to middle men adding that consultaions are still in place for farmers to sell their produce to the government at better prices.
Turbo Sub County protested over the government’s move to buy maize at lower prices.
The farmers want t he government to buy a 90 kg of maize at Sh4000. “The government I s not serious when it says that it will be buying maize at Sh2300, we incurred a lot of losses in the production process,” said Musa Kirima, a farmer.
