Farmers in North Rift region have pointed out poor representation at the county level as the main hindrances in their efforts to maintain proper food supply in the country.
Speaking in a farmers meeting in Eldoret on Monday, the farmers said that the county and the national government has failed to give farmers financial support.
The meeting that brought together Elgeiyo Marakwet governor Eng. Alex Tolgos and his Uasin gishu counterpart Jackson Mandago was meant to discuss the farmers’ grievances.
Kipkorir Menjo one of the farmers in attendance said that the leaders in the region have failed to provide support in distribution of subsidiary agricultural materials.
“The government should invest so much in agriculture since it is the backbone of the economy in the country,” said Menjo.
Kipkorir said that lack of loans and funds for their local unions are some of the big challenges that affect farmers’ efforts to provide food to the nation.
He urged the government to channel more of its resources to supporting agriculture in a bid to reduce food shortages in the country.
Other leaders present during the meeting were Moiben Member of Parliament Silas Tiren and Nandi county senator, Stephen Sang.
