Farmers in Uasin Gishu County have decried the huge losses that they are incurring while drying their maize and wheat before the local millers can accept to buy from them.

Speaking in Eldoret on Wednesday, the farmers say they are asked to dry their cereals again under poor weather, leading them to incur unprecedented losses.

"When you bring your maize here which you had already dried at home, you are asked by these millers to dry them again. Sometimes they are rained on,” Paul Rop, a Moiben farmer.

They have added that the available machines for drying cereals are far too much expensive.

“This year the cost of production has been very high compared to previous years; the cost of fertilizer and seeds was very high. If you were to add another drying expense there, then you would take home nothing,” Johnstone Rono, another farmer said.

They are now appealing to both national and county governments to step in and buy the maize at Sh3000 a bag as promised, as millers are buying at a meager Sh1800 per bag.
