Farmers in Uasin Gishu County have been urged to join co-operatives in order to improve efficiency in service delivery.

Speaking in his office on Wednesday, the County Executive Committee member in charge of Agriculture Cyril Cheruiyot said it is easier to serve a particular group of people with a common need.

“Co-operatives will enable us to really deliver services not to an amorphous group but one that is definite. When people subscribe to a co-operative movement, they can demand for services, which is an easier way than serving people whose needs are not clear. When I want to distribute fertiliser, for example, it is easier to deliver to people who are in a group as opposed to everybody else,” he said.

He went further to mention that co-operative movements will curtail the number of scrupulous people who are used to diverting fertilisers availed to farmers at subsidised rates.

According to him, specific groups can be assigned officers who will link them to the county government.

“We can assign officers to specific groups. These officers will be become responsible to their specific co-operatives, and can be held accountable if anything goes wrong,” he added.
