Uasin Gishu county governor Jackson Mandago has decried high cases of alcoholism among some teachers which he has blamed on poor performance in national examinations.
Speaking at St Catherine’s Kesses Secondary School, the governor said that some teachers engage in alcoholism.
He observed that at least 500 teachers in the county are alcoholics adding that there is need for urgent measures to curb alcohol abuse among teachers.
“Many of our teachers are alcohol abusers a move that has seen Uasin Gishu lag behind in terms of performance,” he said.
Mandago said that for education standards in the county to improve, teachers must devote their time to work.
He observed that education performance in national examinations has gone down and urged teachers, parents and students to work together.
The Uasin Gishu boss said that his government will help improve the state of education.
He however asked the national government to employ more teachers so as to better education standards and make it accessible.
The Governor said that the county is experiencing a shortage of teachers especially in primary schools.
