Ireland will partner with Uasin Gishu in a programme that will see the North Rift’s most vibrant devolved unit train its finance staff on forensic auditing.

This is in an effort to further better its public resource management.

This was revealed when the Irish Ambassador to Kenya Vicent O’Neill paid a courtesy on Uasin Gishu Governor Jackson Mandago on Friday where several other agreements were made, including strengthening the education sector.

An elated Mandago said: “Good managerial skills are the most crucial factors in running county governments in our country at the moment. Devolution just dawned on us the other day and it is important that we set good structures since a good foundation is the best thing that matters.”

“The government is very keen on reaching out to Kenya for trade and other forms of links. Counties are our big areas of interest as we want to partner and contribute to the success of governments closer to the people,” O’Neill said.

Mandago also noted attested that the partnership will go a long way in helping counties achieve their constitutional mandates, with the management of resources and funds being the most crucial pillar.

“Counties’ staff need training's every now and then so that the management of public resources can be improved significantly. Devolved units inherited the functions which were run by the national government and by this virtue, handle huge amounts of resources, with Kenya depending on these governments for change.”
