Addressing reporters at Uasin Gishu county offices in Eldoret on Friday, Melly said devolution will survive only if MCAs pass laws that will protect it.

The senator noted that MCAs have crucial roles to play apart from their oversight roles at the county level.

“I urge MCAs across the county to fight and protect the spirit of devolution through formulation of appropriate legislations,” he said.

The Uasin Gishu senator noted that devolution was mooted to ensure that Kenyans had access to services at the grassroots levels.

Melly noted that the Senate will continue to fight for the interests of devolution adding that other county leaders must also protect devolution.

“Senators will continue to support policies that will advance progress of devolution so that Kenyans can continue to enjoy services,” he said.

Melly warned a section of senators and MPs planning to draft bills against some aspects of devolution saying that their bills will not see the light of the day.

The senator said that the 2010 constitution is still too young for amendments and that any changes must involve the citizens.

He opposed calls to have the management of health reverted to the national government.

Melly said that reverting health to the national government will see many Kenyans suffer since they are enjoying services at the county levels.

The senator asked county leaders to dialogue on the issues facing the sector saying that reverting it to the national government should not be the solution.

A section of senators and MPs want the national government to manage health sector accusing counties of failing to provide quality health services to Kenyans.
