Ainabkoi Member of Parliament William Chepkut on Wednesday moved a motion at the National Assembly urging the government to establish compulsory tree planting programme in all learning institutions and homesteads.
The first time MP said deforestation is a major contributor to climate change hence need to make tree planting compulsory.
"Earlier today, l moved a motion to urge our Kenyan government to establish compulsory tree planting programme in all our learning institutions and our homes. Trees are very essential in conserving our ecosystems," Chepkut said on his official Facebook page, Wednesday.Several MPs have already welcomed the motion and pledged to fully support it.
"I commend Ainabkoi MP for introducing a motion urging the government to introduce compulsory tree planting in institutions and individual households. On behalf of the People of Eldas constituency and Wajir county in general, I support the Motion. I also would like to volunteer to help draft the bill so that it becomes a law," posted Eldas MP Adan Keynan on his Facebook page.
Assembly's leader of minority John Mbadi while supporting the motion expressed the need for a followup to ensure its fully implemented across the country.
"We need to give a minimum number of trees that each learning institution should have so that this programme becomes a success," said the Suba MP.
