Residents of Simat/Kapseret and Kipkenyo wards in Uasin Gishu County have been urged to join Saccos and cooperatives for easier funding.
Speaking in Kapseret on Tuesday, Pauline Tuwei, Kapseret MCA said that the residents should partner to form cooperatives and Saccos to grow economically.
“I advise youths that Saccos are not only for famers, but all of us. Even “mama mboga” can join hands and work as a team for prosperity,” said Tuwei.
Tuwei said that cooperative societies will comprehensively solve problems that farmers face during the supply of agricultural inputs.
She said that people who work together in a cooperative have a stronger bargaining power compared to those who work as individuals.
“When people are in groups, it will be easy to distribute goods such as fertilizers at a subsidized price thus reducing the cost of production,” said Tuwei.
She said that there are many individuals in the ward who have benefited from such groups such as women who were given chicks to improve their livelihoods.
“We have projects called ‘Mama na kuku’ whereby we provide chicks to women who are in a registered Sacco,” said Tuwei.
Tuwei further urged farmers to practice alternative means of farming such as livestock keeping and stop depending too much on maize.
“There are so many cattle dips in this region, let us utilize them well by keeping animals,” said Tuwei.
