The deputy governor has raised concerns over the rising trend where hate messages and statements are allegedly being fumed on social media.

Chemno said that social media are platforms that are meant to encourage sharing of positive information and not grounds for fuming hate speech and rumour mongering.

“Social media users should be responsible and use the platforms wisely, we are worried by the rising trend where hate messages are being fumed on the sites,” he said.

Chemno said that the county government in collaboration with security agencies will track down social media hate mongers.

He added that the county will work with agencies like the National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) to monitor and regulate social media usage in the county.

Chemno’s statement comes a day after Uasin Gishu county commissioner Abdi Mohammed warned rogue social media users.

While speaking at a forum in Eldoret town on Tuesday, Mohammed warned social media users spreading rumours on terror attacks.

He said that such posts and messages are unfounded and are creating fear among the people.

“We have launched a crackdown on those using social media to incite and spread rumours,” he said.
