A group of women from Uasin Gishu county has expressed disappointment over a case that seeks to legalize Female Genital mutilation (FGM).
The women led by Janet Koech have termed the attempt as misplaced and unfortunate.
This comes after a medical doctor Dr. Tatu Kamau filed a case at the Machakos High Court seeking to legalise FGM as well as disbandment of Anti-FGM Board, which has been spearheading the campaign against the practice, abolished.
Speaking in Eldoret town on Thursday, the women said the country had achieved so far in the fight against FGM and legalizing it would be a step in the wrong direction.
"It's unfortunate that somebody can think of having FGM legalized while effects of the act are well known," noted Mrs. Koech.
"At this age, nobody should be talking of allowing FGM. We ought to be working on how to empower the girl child where that culture has been rampant," she added.
In her arguments, Dr. Kamau says all females, especially adults, should be allowed to make choices regarding their bodies without being restricted by legislation.
