Photo/the-star.co.keUber taxi services in Nairobi were paralyzed on Monday after a section of Uber drivers downed their tools in a bid to demand pay rise for their services.
The drivers complained that they spent a lot of money on fuel to drive their customers to their destinations but in return they get very little profit.
“When I was a traditional cab driver, I was making money. We could earn from around Ksh70, 000 to Ksh100, 000 per month as profit,” said one of the taxi driver in Ng’ara, Nairobi.
He added, “Even when Uber came, at its inception, we were also making that kind of money and we were also desired of dealing in a digital platform. That is what made us embrace Uber. However, after all of us are now in the platform with new vehicles, then they (Uber) effected their game plan.”
The drivers demanded that Uber should start charging clients immediately they make a request but not when they border the cab.
They are also calling on Uber to decrease its percentage.
The drivers have vowed to continue demonstrating until Uber’s leadership comes to the table and solve the matter.
