Some 17 Kenyan fishermen were on Monday night arrested in Lake Victoria and detained on Ugandan soil by Ugandan security personnel.

The 17 were taken to two different islands.

According to Nation, nine are being held in Riabana Island while eight are at Kalangala Island.

Confirming the incident, Suba North OCPD Wilson Nanga said the Kenyan security personnel have begun investigating the matter to find out the cause of the arrest.

“We are finding out the reason our Ugandan counterparts arrested and detained our fishermen in their islands,” said Mr Nanga.

The Lake Victoria Beach Management Unit Network Chairperson Edward Oremo has revealed that the Kenyans were arrested by armed Ugandan security personnel some kilometres from Remba Island and made to board one boat.

Remba Island is in the Kenyan waters and sits three kilometres away from the Uganda-Kenya border in the lake.
