A Ugandan woman yesterday denied being in Kenya illegally, saying she was married to a Kenyan citizen.
Harriet Awuor was presented before a Kisumu court and accused of unlawful presence in the country. She was accused on a second count of making false declaration in a bid to obtain a passport.
The court, presided over by chief magistrate Lucy Gitari, heard that Ms Awuor did not have her Ugandan identification card when she went to apply for Kenyan credentials at the Immigrations office in Kisumu on October 9.
Her Kenyan ID had been illegally obtained, it further heard.
This was in contravention of Citizenship and Immigration Act of 2011.
She was released on a Sh200,000 bond with a Kenyan surety of a similar amount. The matter will be mentioned on October 27 and heard January 15, 2015.
