Siaya County Administration Police boss Patrick Lumumba said the incident targeted police officers patrolling the vast waters.

"It is true three police officers were attacked by Ugandan soldiers and currently, they are held at Namaingo Island," he said.

According to Lumumba, the suspected Ugandan soldiers, numbering between four and eight, hijacked Kenyans boats and confiscated engines.

"They used a Kenyan boat to camouflage before ambushing our officers who mistakenly thought they were Kenyan officers."

Bondo MP Gideon Ochanda has called for unconditional release of the Kenyan policemen and four fishermen whom he says are being held unlawfully.

"It is more than five hours since the attack yet the government is yet to issue a statement over the same," he said.
