Uganda’s taxman has begun the auction of Nakumatt goods in a bid to recover millions owed by the struggling regional retailer.
The Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) on Tuesday began the public auctions by selling the Nakumatt perishable goods.
The clearance started selling at two of Nakumatt’s outlets in Kampala, Kamwokya and Bugolobi, even as URA said that they are still in talks with the retailer over a possible recovery of Sh7.3 million.
URA took over Nakumatt’s operations in Uganda last month to prioritise itself on all income.
The taxman also took over three Nakumatt branches and their warehouse that also doubles up as the Uganda headquarters.
“The clearance sale has started with Bugolobi branch today. After, we move to Kamwokya as we continue talks with the client,” URA said on their official Twitter page.
