President Uhuru Kenyatta and Cord leader Raila Odinga are free to campaign ahead of the August General election despite the official campaigns set to begin in June.
Making the announcement, IEBC chair Wafula Chebukati said that there was no law that requires a leader to stop campaigning.
Chebukati was replying to Presidential aspirant Philip Murgor, who demanded IEBC to restrict the two from carrying out campaigns, on grounds that it was illegal.
“Though according to our timelines the campaign for the August 8 election should start in June, there is no law that bars anyone from campaigning early. As a commission, we have no power to stop anyone from going across the country looking for voters,” Chebukati said.
However, as per the IEBC regulations, the campaigns should begin on June 28th.
Murgor called on the electoral body to crack the whip on leaders conducting early campaigns highlighting that it could pose a legal challenge which might lead to the Election results being declared invalid.
Kenyatta and the former Prime Minister have been holding various rallies throughout the country trying to woo Kenyans to vote for them.
