Prof. Hellen Sambili has been appointed the first Vice Chancellor of Garissa University as the institution continues to pick up slowly following the 2015 terror attack that left several students dead and others injured.
Sambili, who was appointed by President Uhuru Kenyatta, is expected to take over her new role with immediate effect as the management seeks to transform the institution into a global spanning conglomeration.
Addressing different stakeholders during the award of the charter ceremony held at State House, Nairobi, President Kenyatta said that it is a great milestone for the institution to gain the new status, adding that he is committed to improving it if he retains power after the Thursday election.
He instituted that the nation will move on amidst a section of leaders and Kenyans who continue to preach evil at this electioneering period. “Kenya will always triumph over those who preach hate, evil and destruction,” President Kenyatta said, as quoted by The Star.
The new status makes Garissa University the first fully-fledged public university in the marginalized North-Eastern region. The head of state also warned those who are likely to take actions that will affect the institution in a negative manner to desist from the same.
