Women from Gatundu South, on Sunday evening staged a four-hour peaceful demonstration against the increased number of bars, alcoholism, and bhang usage in the area.
Speaking during the peaceful protest, more than 100 women from Kirangi and Kuri villages in the area expressed their anger at losing their husbands and sons to alcoholism.
"We want CS Fred Matiang'i to intervene and save our sons and husbands from this menace, it is really iritating that we have lost them all to alcohol," a young woman in the protest said.
"We want our men to stop drinking when they’re not supposed to because they do not even have jobs and do not even help us in our daily chores,” another protester added.
"Domestic violence has been on the rise due to alcohol. In this shopping center, we have only four shops but seven bars,” another woman identified as Waithera Mwangi said.
The protest comes barely a few days after Interior CS Fred Matiang’i ordered County Commissioners to launch a crackdown on drugs and illicit brews.
The protesters further accused the police officers from the area of taking bribes from the bar owners making it hard for the police to shut them down when need arises.
The women also accused their drunk husbands of being unable to sire children adding that many of them have since fled their homes
Others were said to have sold most of their property to fetch money for alcohol.
They then called upon President Uhuru Kenyatta to intervene and save their sons and husbands from the runaway alcoholism.
