This is after the deadly Saturday night accident that claimed 40 lives at Laini along the busy Naivasha -Nakuru highway.

In a statement to newsrooms on Sunday, Kenyatta postponed the visit scheduled for tomorrow, December 13 to visit the families of the 11 General Service Unit (GSU) officers who perished in the accident.

The statement from State House spokesman Manoah Esipisu stated, “The President’s visit to Narok scheduled for Tuesday, 13 December 2016, has been postponed so he can visit with the families of the 11 officers from the VIP protection team of the General Service Unit (GSU) killed in a tragic road accident on the Naivasha-Nakuru Road last night.”

Earlier, Esipisu confirmed that the 11 GSU officers who died in the accident provide VIP protection, including to the president.

The officers were travelling back to Nairobi after the presidential coverage in Bomet.

Kenyatta expressed his condolences to the families of all those affected by the Saturday evening accident.

The accident occurred after a Uganda-bound lorry ferrying inflammable material lost control, ramming into other vehicles and exploding. The explosion spiralled out of control as the fuel was flowing on the road carrying with the fire that engulfed the 13 vehicles.

Kenyatta termed the accident "unnecessary" and directed all agencies involved to expeditiously investigate the incident.

"The President notes that the tanker responsible for the deaths should not have been on that particular road at that hour, and he expects the agencies responsible for enforcing traffic regulation to fully investigate this tragic breach," the statement said.
