Following outcry by Kenyans on social media, President Uhuru Kenyatta has instructed Treasury to come up with policies that will tame the escalating prices of basic commodities.
State House spokesperson Manoah Esipisu in his weekly briefing said a supplementary budget will be tabled in Parliament on Tuesday to address the crisis.
“The government will table a supplementary budget in Parliament when it resumes on Tuesday so that the cost of basic commodities comes down as soon as possible,” said Esipisu on Sunday.
He added, “Treasury Cabinet Secretary Henry Rotich is working on the budget.”
There has been public uproar over the prices of basic products including unga, milk and sugar.
Frustrated members of the public took to Twitter with calls for urgent action to lower the prices.
They told the President that beating Nasa flag bearer Raila Odinga in the August election should be the least of his concerns.
A 2kg packet of sugar is currently retailing at Sh380, while a 500ml packet of milk is going for as much as Sh70.
The price of maize flour is still at Sh140, despite the government’s promise weeks ago that it would go down to below Sh120.
