President Uhuru Kenyatta broke a 29-year old record following his 98.25 percent score in the presidential repeat election, recalls historian Nyachieo Bogonko.

Although not many may recall, Bogonko says, the record was last set by President Daniel Moi during the eve days of the single party rule.

"President Uhuru's 98.25 percent record is a new record. I last documented in 1988 during the queue voting," said the retired historian.

Widely boycotted by opposition voters, the Thursday's elections were solely a one man race with Uhuru scoring 7.4 million of the 19.5 million voters.

At that time, Moi mnaged to score 2.3 million votes of the 5.5 million registered votes but the figure translated to 98 percent of the turnout.

"In a democratic Kenya that was unexpected given that many people were running. Basically this qualifies to be documented," he said in an interview.

Since the inception of the pluralism in the country, Kenya's elections have highly been competitive.

Electoral body IEBC declared Uhuru the winner despite discontent from opposition leaders who failed to participate due to 'lack of electoral' reforms.
