President Uhuru Kenyatta on Saturday kick-started construction works for a hostel block at Garissa University College in Garissa town.
Accompanied by Deputy President William Ruto and local leaders, he said the new hostel will help shoulder the problem of accommodation as the institution plans to admit more students.
"Today (Saturday), I visited Garissa University College where I inspected the construction of a new hostel that will increase the admission capacity of students at the university," the president said on his official Facebook account.
"I commemorated the young lives lost in the terror attack that brought profound sadness in our nation."
He visited the institution for the first time since it suffered a terrorists attack in April 2, 2015.
The incident left 148 people dead.
The ground breaking ceremony marks the end of his visit to Northern Kenya where he initiated development projects including construction works for the Nuno-Modogashe road, opening of the Huduma Centre as well as the commissioning of the Mwangaza Mtaani project in Garissa town.
He said the projects will help uplift the livelihoods of residents.
