The Head of State accused leaders of using the project to gain political mileage.

Uhuru dismissed claims that the project will lead to desertification in a number of counties, maintaining that the aim of the tunnel is to benefit Murang'a and Nairobi residents.

"We sometimes bring politics where politics is not wanted. This is the life of people. This project is expected to solve water problems in places like here," said Uhuru.

He further challenged politicians to concentrate on other important matters rather than politicizing the project.

"Our politicians should be told that they can engage in politics but they should not do so at the expence of the lives of people," said Uhuru.

He added that the project is meant to harness water that would rather end up in the Indian Ocean.

Uhuru was speaking in Kamulu.

Last week, Cord leader Raila Odinga claimed that the water project will lead to desertification because the availability of water in the catchment areas would be affected.
