President Uhuru Kenyatta commissioned new barracks during the NYS Passout Parade in Gilgil, Tuesday.
Flanked by Public Service, Youth and Gender Affairs Cabinet Secretary Sicily Kariuki, Uhuru said the barracks named: 'Uhuru Kenyatta Barracks', would help enhance security in the Rift valley region and Kenya at large.
"I can say without reservation that the hard work of this institution deserves our admiration, our respect, and our recognition, more so because we live in an era where the skills imparted by this institution, are sorely needed,'' he said.
According to him, the young men and women of today face the pressures of globalisation, cultural, historical and demographic changes and a world that is evolving at neck- breaking speed.
"They must develop skills and habits outside those offered by conventional educational practices in order to tap into new opportunities which extend beyond national boundaries."
He further directed that the number of youth recruited into the NYS be increased from 21,870 to 30,000.
