The construction of the Nairobi-Naivasha section of Standard Gauge Railway is expected to begin by September this year, President Uhuru Kenyatta has said.

Uhuru confirmed this during the 13th Northern Corridor Integration Projects Summit in Kampala, Uganda on Saturday.

“A commercial contract and financing agreement for the Nairobi-Naivasha section of SGR, has been signed and construction expected to begin by September,” said Uhuru.

The president also noted that construction of the Mombasa-Nairobi SGR section has now reached 75 percent and is expected to be completed by 2017.

“We have also signed a commercial agreement with China Communication Construction Company for the Naivasha-Kisumu-Malaba sections,” he added.

The Head of Sate termed the integration projects as a success, noting that major strides have been achieved in the integration projects with the country’s section of the SGR having made great progress.

He was spoke when he joined other East African Heads of States to review the progress made under the Northern Corridor Integration Projects initiative.
