Despite warning by President Donald Trump’s top representative in Kenya, Robert Godec on controversial election laws, President Uhuru Kenyatta assented to law the election amendment Bill of 2017.
As part of its mandate to support democracy, US had challenged Uhuru to drop the laws, which it says could sabotage IEBC from conducting free and fair presidential elections.
But a fire breathing Kenyatta on Saturday dismissed claims that Kenya is facing a political turmoil and warned the west against meddling.
“Kenya is a sovereign state and there is no crisis at all. It’s all about one individual who does not want to appreciate the majority,” he said, in reference to Raila Odinga.
On proposed dialogue by certain quarter, Uhuru said:” We cannot allow the West to meddle in our affairs and they should not think of such a thing.”
In his address, Godec had warned that the US will take stiff actions against leaders who were sabotaging IEBC adding that travel ban would be on top of his government’s priority.
With the elections laws in place and opposition leader Raila Odinga inviting Kenyan’s friends to intervene, the US is yet to issue a comprehensive statement on the matter.
