The Jamhuru Day celebration marked at Moi Stadium Kasarani was a less coloured affair after Nairobians chose to stay awway from the event.

Most of the stadium was empty with just a section of seats on one side being occupied by the president and a number of compatriots. 

It is not clear if the event organisers had anticipated the low numbers.

With only a few thousand people in the stadium, the organisers had to delay the start of the event from 10am as earlier scheduled so as to get more people into the 60,000 capacity stadium.

Even by 11:15am the function had not yet begun, with President Uhuru Kenyatta arriving at the stadium a few minutes to noon.

The celebration was however graced by Chief Justice David Maraga.

The gates at Kasarani were opened at 7am.
