President Uhuru Kenyatta has intensified campaigns to have Foreign Affairs Cabinet Secretary Amina Mohammed appointed as African Union Chairperson.
Amina is tipped to replace outgoing chairperson Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma after the assembly of state failed to settle on a common name, forcing elections to be pushed to January 2017.
Speaking in Uganda on Sunday, Uhuru challenged East African countries to back Amina given her immense experience in foreign relations.
“I call upon our neighbours to support us on this because our choice is someone who has been tested before. She is able to deliver and my wish is that we set aside our regional differences and support her bid,” Uhuru said.
“She has done fantastic job before and I am hopeful that she will be able to add more knowledge on African affairs should she get the chance,” he said.
Earlier this week Kenya received backing from Rwanda and Southern Sudan who vowed to support the CS who played a key role in ICC cases that involved President Kenyatta and his Deputy William Ruto.
