President Uhuru Kenyatta made true his promise of launching the Standard Gauge Railway by the first of June 2017.
Speaking as he flagged off the first SGR cargo train at Port Reitz in Mombasa, President Kenyatta said the move has shown that the country can achieve greater development if Kenyans work together with a common purpose.
“This indicates what we can achieve if we work together as a nation. The foundation we are laying today is not just for us; it’s for generations to come,” he said.
He added that the historic moment was not just for Jubilee but was a proud moment for all Kenyans, urging them to therefore remain united in the country.
“We have invested about $600 million at this Mombasa Port in the last two and a half years. That shows that we mean business, we have continued to invest in making it easier for Kenyans to do business,” he added.
The Tuesday launch came just a day to the formal unveiling of the maiden passenger train from Mombasa to Nairobi Wednesday morning.
