President Uhuru Kenyatta Thursday gave a posthumous decoration to the late Njiru Stephen Kimemia.
Njiru who was laid to rest at his father’s home in Kerugoya on Wednesday died in a London hospital last week where he was undergoing treatment.
During the burial, the President urged Kenyans to emulate the late Dr Stephen Njiru, saying it is in serving the country selflessly and with humility that Kenya can achieve both social and economic progress.
The late Njiru was one of Uhuru's lawyers at the ICC.
Uhuru also presented Ms Mukami Elois Kimathi, widow of freedom hero Field Marshall Dedan Kimathi with the Elder of the Order of the Burning Spear award for the role she played in the independence war.
According to PSCU, also presented with a similar award was Ms Fatuma Mohamed Hirsi, a peacemaker from Wajir County.
The President, who was joined by his deputy William Ruto at the function held at State House, told Ms Mukami and Ms Fatuma that Kenya was proud of them.
“Mama Mukami, thank you for the role you played in our independence war. And thank you Mama Fatuma for fostering peace between our communities,” said the President.
He also presented awards to Health CS Cleopa Mailu (Elder of the Golden Heart) and Ogeto Kennedy Nyabuti (Elder of the Order of the Burning Spear).
Ogetto, an advocate, is a member of the Kenya Ports Authority and former chairman of the Anti-Money Laundering Advisory Board.
