President Uhuru Kenyatta has dismissed calls to disband the Independent Boundaries and Electoral Commission saying it will be ‘total contravention’ of the constitution.
The electoral body is facing mounting pressure from opposition Cord who have recently launched demonstrations in a bid to have it disbanded
“I have no reason to gag IEBC like what our friends from Cord are doing. We must learn to respect independent offices because they were created under the spirit of the new constitution,” Uhuru said at Nyagesenda on Thursday.
“If we sack them, even an infant in law school knows that they can sue us in the court and the following day my decision is quashed through the court’s order. I do not want to be viewed as one person who disrespects the rule of law,” he added.
He challenged the opposition to use right channels as stipulated in the constitution saying it will be the best way to show respect to the constitution of the country.
“Kenya is not a banana republic as some people think. Cord knows that there are right channels that should be followed to remove commissioners from independent offices. I will never be a party of a cohort that is out to frustrate independent offices. Let’s protect the constitution,” he added.
