President Uhuru Kenyatta has denied claims that he ordered switching off leading television stations during the controversial swearing-in of Raila Odinga in January.

Instead, Uhuru says, the television stations in question were switched off for one day to curb possibility of chaos breaking across the country.

In an interview aired by CNN on Friday, Uhuru also told host Christiane Amanpour that not all stations were however switched off.

"Not all stations were switched off. Kenya has over 70 TV stations and it is unfair to say all of them went off air," he said.

"Actually, because of intelligence we had gathered about Raila's swearing-in, only three were switched off for a single day," he added.

But despite his claims, both NTV, KTN News and Citizen TV went off air for a week despite court orders restraining the state from closure.

The interview at London was the first since the head of state resolved to work with Raila, his perennial political competitor.
