The President extended the invitation when he met Cord Co-Principals Raila Odinga and Moses Wetangula at State House Nairobi at a State luncheon in honour of visiting Republic of South Korea President Park Geun-hye.

Presidential Strategic Communications Unit on its official Twitter account said the president during the meeting extended an olive branch to the opposition by inviting them to Afraha Stadium where Madaraka Day celebrations will be held.

"Raila Odinga, Wetangula were invited to Afraha during a luncheon in honour of South Korean President at State House," PSCU said.

It is however, not clear whether the opposition leaders will honour the invitation since High Court on Tuesday morning ruled that Cord had the right to hold a parallel Madaraka Day rally at Nairobi's Uhuru Park.

Cord has planned to hold its own celebrations parallel to the national event that will be held in Nakuru and attended by Uhuru and Deputy President William Ruto.

Government and the opposition before High Court Judge George Odunga's ruling were at loggerheads over the Uhuru Park rally.

Whereas the opposition insisted that they had every right to hold the meeting, government led by Interior Cabinet Secretary Joseph Nkaissery held the event was unlawful as it amounted to belittling the presidency.
