Kenya’s oldest first African school for blacks, Alliance High School has described the death of Margret Wambui Kenyatta as ‘tragedy’ and described her as ‘gallant’ women rights activist.
Ms. Kenyatta, the only daughter to Mzee Jomo Kenyatta and his first wife Grace Wahu Kenyatta, reportedly died at a Nairobi Hospital on Wednesday evening aged 89.
And being among the few African women to go through Kikuyu based Alliance High School before the establishment of Alliance Girls High School, the education giant has eulogized her in a special way.
“It is with deep regret to hear the unfortunate demise of Margret Kenyatta, the only surviving old girl in Alliance High School,” read a statement in the school’s official website.
“This is a tragedy to the nation and we celebrate her activism in advocating for women’s rights,” added the statement.
Ms. Kenyatta, who was President Uhuru Kenyatta’s step sister, was the first woman to be elected Mayor of Nairobi City in 1970, a position she held until 1976.
She was the second woman to serve in a coveted political seat after Grace Onyango, who had been elected Kisumu Mayor, before being elected first woman MP in 1969.
The eldest daughter of the country’s founding father, Jomo Kenyatta was however not married and did not survive with any children.
