The Matatu Owners Association Coast region chapter has lauded President Uhuru Kenyatta for ordering the removal of National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) officers from the roads. The Association’s Coast regional Coordinator Salim Mbarack Salim said NTSA officers should remain in their offices drafting policies.Speaking in Mombasa on Wednesday Mbarack accused NTSA officers of hiding in forests and later stopping vehicles over claims of being driven at high speed.“NTSA has fully taken the duty of traffic police officers of monitoring traffic rules on the roads. What will the traffic officers do?” asked Mbarack. He said the authority has failed, adding that it could be the major cause of accidents on various roads countrywide.“Motorists now fear NTSA more than death itself because of harassment,” said Mbarack.Mbarack said he supports President Uhuru’s decision that the mandate of ensuring observation of traffic rules is left to traffic police officers.Meanwhile, Mbarack has called on NTSA Director General Francis Meja to ensure he always holds talks with transport stakeholders in the country before making major changes in the transport sector.Mbarack said making changes in the transport sector without consultations with transport stakeholders in the country have caused major losses to public transport companies in the county. He called on the transport body to be open to ideas from transport stakeholders to avoid conflict between the authority and public transport company owners in the country. Is there a newsworthy accident, incident or event happening in Mombasa County that you want Hivisasa to cover?
