With just less than 10 days to the August 8 polls, a new poll has indicated president Uhuru Kenyatta will beat the National Super Alliance (Nasa) presidential candidate Raila Odinga.
According to the findings by the Centre for African Progress (CAP) Uhuru would emerge victorious with 53 per cent against Raila’s 42 per cent.
The survey further reveals five per cent of voters are still undecided for whom to elect.
Those who would vote for Kenyatta are happy with his track record on development projects in the last four years while those who would vote for the former prime minister attributed to the role he played in the construction of Thika Super Highway.
“Kenyatta’s high ratings as revealed by the respondents are attributed to the Standard Gauge Railway project, the free maternity scheme and the laptop project, though in some places. Those in favor of Odinga’s candidacy pointed out the role he played in the construction of the Thika Super Highway,” the organisation’s Operations Manager Abel Oyieyo stated.
“The numbers are entirely based on their support base with each of the candidate’s supporters believing that their preferred candidate is best suited in promoting peaceful elections in the country,” Oyieyo added.
Oyieyo further noted the election would be won in the first round.
“When you pick the percentages and focus on a voter turnout of 85 percent, Kenyatta will get 7,971,630, Odinga gets 6,289,426 and all the other candidates put together including the undecided they get 844, 183. With these numbers, it will be a one round election,” said Oyieyo.
The poll was conducted between July 24 and 27.9,995 respondents were interviewed across the 47 counties. It is a much higher sample population; given other pollsters sample an average of 2,000 people.
