President Uhuru Kenyatta on Tuesday made a rather unexpected request to an opposition governor.
The President expressed his willingness to attend a bullfighting event in Western Kenya and asked Kakamega Governor Wycliffe Oparanya to invite him when the county hosts the cultural ceremony.
"Let me take this opportunity to thank governor of the green jewel and bullfighters, Governor Oparanya. I await your invite to the next bullfight," said Uhuru during his address to the 5th Annual Devolution Conference.
The request to attend the cultural ceremony was unforeseen by many.
Earlier on, Oparanya, who is Raila Odinga's deputy in the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) Party, had announced he was planning to appoint former Kakamega Senator and his rival Boni Khalwale as the head of bullfighting in the county.
Khalwale, who is the Ford-Kenya deputy party leader is popularly known by his supporters as 'the bullfighter' due to his unmatched love for the sport.
"Kakamega County is known for its bullfighting and you remember the former Senator Boni Khalwale used to be the promoter and because we are missing him, I am considering appointing him to be in charge of bullfighting," said Oparanya at the Kakamega High School on Tuesday.
Bullfighting is a major tourist attraction in Western Kenya as it draws thousands of fans who visit to witness as the bulls 'lock horns'.
The event has led to the establishment of stadiums specifically for the sport at Shinyalu and Ikolomani constituencies.
